Dancing in a circle is an ancient tradition common to many cultures around the globe, and performed for all sorts of reasons. The dancing might mark special occasions, strengthen community or encourage togetherness. Modern circle dance draws on the rich and diverse traditional dances of many countries. These include the Balkans, Greece, Israel, Russia and France. In the 40 years or so that circle dance has spread around the world, there is a growing repertoire of choreographed dances to all kinds of music, from native and traditional to pop and classical.
Circle dances can be energetic and lively, or gentle and reflective. The aim is to experience the joy of dancing with others and to create a sense of well-being and community.
Anyone of any age or ability can circle dance and most dances can be adapted to allow for different abilities. Each dance is taught, there is no audience and you don’t have to have a partner to do it. No special clothing is required as long as you can move in it (comfortable shoes are advisable!). It’s way of enjoying music too; along with making music and listening to music, dance is another way of responding to music and rhythm.
Anyone is welcome to join. Contact group leader Alice via the email link above if you are interested.
